Patrick M. Butler Charitable Fund

Patrick M. ButlerPatrick M. Butler was the manager of Nutter's Hyannis office, a partner in the firm's Real Estate and Finance Department, and a member of the firm's Land Use group. He concentrated his practice in land use and commercial real estate transactions. Pat had significant expertise in the regulatory permitting process throughout Cape Cod and the Islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.

As a Cape Cod attorney with the resources of a full-service Boston-based law firm, Pat represented many of the area’s businesses, health care institutions, nonprofit institutions, and individuals, along with national companies and public utilities before the Cape Cod Commission, a regional land use and regulatory agency. The Cape Cod Economic Development Council honored Pat with the Award for Leadership in 1995. The Hyannis Chamber of Commerce named him “Citizen of the Year” in 1997.

Pat was a member of the Barnstable County Bar Association and a conciliator for the association. He was also a member of the Boston Bar Association.  He began his legal career as an assistant district attorney for Cape Cod and the islands.

Pat was frequently quoted as an expert to industry and local media on land use and regulatory issues. He authored “The Cape Cod Commission - Five Years Later,” published by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly. He lectured at Cape Cod Community College and to the Barnstable County Police Academy.

A Barnstable resident, Pat was also actively involved in many civic and community organizations. He serves as trustee and chairman of the Healthcare Foundation of Cape Cod and as a clerk of the Cape and Islands United Way. Pat was a member of the Business Roundtable of the Association to Preserve Cape Cod, and served as an officer and director of the Barnstable Youth Hockey Association, and the Barnstable Horace Mann Charter School.

Pat had extensive experience representing hospitals, religious organizations, recreational facilities, and private property owners with charitable property tax exemption work, including the preparation and filing of exemption requests, abatements, and preparation, filing, and negotiation of Appellate Tax Board appeals with settlement.

During law school, Pat received the Tauro Award for Oral Advocacy and was a member of the National Moot Court team.
